If you want to write, you have to read. Author and Writing for Mystic Activists workshop leader Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove shared that he aims to read at least half of the National Book Awards Finalists each year. Sounds like good advice to me. Finalists for the 2020 Award for fiction were Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu, Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam, A Children’s Bible by Lydia Millet, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw, and Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. Interior Chinatown won. I’ve just started reading The Secret Lives of Church Ladies. I’ll check back when I’m done.
